Making the Transition
The Department of Defense’s SkillBridge program is not just about acquiring new skills. It's about establishing meaningful networks too. SkillBridge connects those leaving the military with industry partners, like Atlas Tech, to gain valuable in-depth, on-the-job training during the last 180 days of service.
Proven Success
Laurence Mills came to Atlas Tech in 2022 while finishing up his 22-year career with the U.S. Air Force. He learned of Atlas through the SkillBridge Program and came on as a Systems Administrator. Laurence shares more about his experience as well as advice for those interested in the program.
What surprised you the most about the program?
Initially, I thought since this was an internship that
I’d be assigned a few basic-level tasks to keep me occupied, but Atlas did the complete opposite. I was treated like a full-time employee from day one. I was assigned to a project and given the same expectations and responsibilities as all other Team Members.
How Did the SkillBridge Program help your transition from Active Duty to a Civilian Career?
SkillBridge helped me by allowing me to get real-time hands-on experience in an actual civilian work environment.
What would you tell others thinking about applying for this internship opportunity?
DO IT!!! The knowledge and experience needed in a civilian career can only be gained by doing the job. At Atlas I was not treated as an intern, but as a true and valued member of the team.
